Every month in Australia, 90 children are diagnosed with cancer.
For those families, their lives are changed forever. Cancer puts families under enormous pressure. It can feel like it’s impossible to hold it together.
This May, I am taking part in the Heartbreak to Hope Walk to raise funds for Redkite to provide emotional, financial and practical support and care to families facing childhood cancer.

For the month of May, I’ll be participating in an event called the “Heartbreak to Hope Walk” by Redkite. My goal is to raise $2,000 and walk 100km!
After 13 years of being ashamed that I had cancer, I’m finally confident enough to share my story.
At 14 years old, I was diagnosed with Non-Hodgkin’s Lymphoma (A cancer of white blood cells that begins in the lymphatic system, a vital part of the immune system that defends against disease).
I underwent several rounds of chemotherapy, blood transfusions, CT scans, MRIs, PET scans, lumbar punctures, Pericardiocentesis and oocyte cryopreservation. It was a lot for a young teen to go through—especially the hair loss from chemo. That hit me the hardest. My hair gave me confidence, and when I lost it, I felt like I had none left.
Even though I smiled to make it seem like everything was okay, inside I was struggling. I would compare myself to every other girl, wondering, “Why can’t I be like them, living a normal life?” That mindset led to even darker thoughts and a deep sense of loneliness, especially since I was the only student at my high school going through cancer.
That’s why I’m taking this opportunity:
To walk for my 14-year-old self.
To walk for every other kid out there facing cancer, feeling like they’re alone in this.
To walk for the trauma that still lingers in cancer patients, survivors, friends and family.
